USAG Stuttgart | Base Overview & Info (2024)

Mission

It is the mission of the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart to provide facility support services and quality-of-life programs and activities to Service members, Civilians, Retirees and their Families in our area of operation. This area encompasses the installations contained within the cities of Stuttgart, Boeblingen, Vaihingen and Moehringen. Stuttgart is a "Purple" community meaning that all Armed Forces to include the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are supported by USAG Stuttgart. For more information, go to the USAG Stuttgart homepage.

History

Panzer Kaserne (literally tank barracks) is located in Böblingen, Germany and a part of USAG Stuttgart. The post is administered by U.S. Army Installation Command-Europe (IMCOM-Europe), a legacy from its use as an Army installation since just after World War II. Panzer Kaserne hosts the headquarters of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe Africa (MARFOREURAF) and various Special Operations units of the Army and Navy supporting EUCOM and AFRICOM.

Patch Barracks was renamed from the German Kurmärker Kaserne in1952 and is located in Vaihingen (Stuttgart). It was originally built for use by the German Army (Heer) in 1936-1937.During World War II, it served as the headquarters and barracks for the Wehrmacht's 7th Panzer Regiment, with associated unit shooting ranges and training areas located at the nearby Panzer Kaserne.

Kelley Barracks (formerly Helenen Kaserne) is headquarters of United States Africa Command and is located in Stuttgart-Mõhringen. In September 1949 Helenen Kaserne was renamed by Brigadier General Arnold J. Funk to the Kelley Barracks in honor of Staff Sergeant Jonah E. Kelley of the 78th Infantry Division, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions occurring at Kesternich, Germany in January 1945 during the Battle of Kesternich. From 1951 until 1992 VII Corps was headquartered at the base. In February 2007, Kelley Barracks was designated to house Transition Team of United States Africa Command and became the permanent headquarters when the command was activated on 1 October 2008.

Population

We are a large municipality. Like large municipalities, we are service providers. The Stuttgart Military Community is known as a "Purple Community," meaning that all branches of service (to include active duty, reserve and guard) are assigned here from the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard. Government Civilian employees, contract employees and local national hires are also part of the workforce in the community.

Stuttgart is the capital and largest city of German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. It is located on the Neckar river in a fertile valley known locally as the "Stuttgart Cauldron" and lies an hour from the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest. Its area has a population of 635,911 making it the sixth largest city in Germany. Stuttgart was one of the host cities for the official tournaments of the 1974 and 2006 FIFA World Cups. Stuttgart is unusual in the scheme of German cities. It is spread across a variety of hills (some of them covered in vineyards), valleys (especially around the Neckar river and the Stuttgart basin) and parks. The city is known as the "cradle of the automobile". As such, it is home to famous automobile museums like the Mercedes-Benz Museum and Porsche Museum, as well as numerous auto-enthusiast magazines, which contributes to Stuttgart status as German's "Autohauptstadt" (car capital city). Stuttgart is known for its strong high-tech industry in the automotive sector. It has the highest standard of prosperity of any German city. In addition to many medium-sized companies, several major corporations are headquartered in Stuttgart, including Porsche, Bosch and Mercedes-Benz group.

USAG Stuttgart has approximately 23,000 community members. To put our population in perspective, the National League of Cities data shows that over 90% of municipal governments in the U.S. have populations under 25,000. We are a large municipality.

Location

United States Army Garrison (USAG) Stuttgart is located in the southwest German city of Stuttgart, the cultural and political capital of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The city has over 600,000 inhabitants, or more than 1.5 million including the adjoining suburbs. If travel is in your plans, Stuttgart's location makes it convenient to drive or take a train to places such as, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, or even the Netherlands which are all a day's drive, or train ride away. Stuttgart's base operator is 011-49-6111-43-592-1140 or DSN 314-592-1140.

Base Transportation

Military Shuttle Bus

The Stuttgart military community operates a shuttle bus service to and from Patch Barracks, Kelley Barracks, Panzer Kaserne, Robinson Barracks and the Stuttgart Army Airfield. A current bus schedule will be provided at the briefing during initial inprocessing at the Central Processing Facility. The shuttle bus service is free to all DOD ID card holders.

Taxis

There are two cab systems in Stuttgart; taxis and "cars". The taxis carry the taxi sign and the vehicles are all off-white in color. The other cab services cost a bit less, but you must always call to order them - very much like a limousine service. Tips are included in the taxi fare. You can either round off the fare to the next highest Euro for a small tip of change, or give a couple Euro if desired.

German Buses, Trolleys and Subways

The German public transportation system is excellent. The services run throughout the day and late into the night and are quite economical. The local community has numerous bus, trolley and subway lines that connect the outlying villages with downtown Stuttgart and with other villages. The connections are convenient and timely. All military installations have local transportation stops nearby. The Army Community Service Center offers Host Nation Orientation which includes instruction on using German transportation.

Uber

Uber is now available in the Stuttgart area and may be accessed through the Uber app.
